Is a 2+2 program right for you?

Posted on May 24th, 2022 by Bryanna Davis

You’ve likely heard about the benefits of pursuing a 2+2 program. Many students around the world have elected to take part in this transfer program in the United States when starting their international journey. If you’re not familiar with what this type of program includes, here we’ve broken down the basics for you and included a focus for those interested in studying in Florida.

2+2 Program Basics

A 2+2 program works like this – you attend a college that participates in the program for two years then transfer to a participating university within the same state. This allows you to dive right into your U.S. education while saving money and gaining a top education, then transfer to a university for a completely new experience and to finish out your degree.

There are many participating schools throughout the United States. Here we will share more on the College of Central Florida (CF) as an example. CF offers a 2+2 program to students who would like to pursue an associate degree and who have the intention of obtaining a bachelor’s degree. Students interested in transferring to a university after they’ve received an associate degree from CF would need to notate this on their initial CF application. When students complete an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program at CF, they are automatically guaranteed transfer admission to any of the following institutions for a bachelor’s degree program.

  • University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando
  • University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa
  • Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee
  • The University of Florida (UF) Online

Once accepted into CF, students will need to work with their advisors to map out a plan to ensure a smooth transfer after obtaining an associate degree.

Financial Considerations

If you’ve researched studying in the United States, you already know that the cost of an education can be expensive – attending a university all four years can add up quickly. However, what many students have found is that attending a college for two years then transferring to a larger university can save a lot of money. For example, the cost of studying at the College of Central Florida is $20,662.80 per year on campus. For comparison, you can view the annual on-campus cost for a few universities in Florida:

  • UCF Undergraduate Estimated Expenses: $37,207
    • CF savings: $16,544.20 per year
  • USF Undergraduate Estimated Expenses: $34,780
    • CF savings: $14,117.20 per year
  • FAMU Undergraduate Estimated Expenses: $35,373
    • CF savings: $14,710.20 per year
  • UF Online Undergraduate Estimated Expenses: $30,640
    • CF savings: $9,977.20 per year
