Cuba Academic Travel Restrictions Eased
Posted on January 17th, 2011 by Jennifer FrankelIn a moved welcomed by many in the international education field, the Obama Administration issued a press release on Friday easing the restrictions in place for those wanting to travel to Cuba for Academic reasons.
Highlights of the release include:
The President has directed that changes be made to regulations and policies governing: (1) purposeful travel; (2) non-family remittances; and (3) U.S. airports supporting licensed charter flights to and from Cuba. These measures will increase people-to-people contact; support civil society in Cuba; enhance the free flow of information to, from, and among the Cuban people; and help promote their independence from Cuban authorities.
Although the news was widely welcomed, it has met with strong criticism from the Cuban Foreign Ministry for not showing any real interest in improving relations between the two countries. In a statement e-mailed to foreign journalists, the Ministry says the easing of travel restrictions announced Friday by Washington only benefit “specific categories of Americans and does not restore the right to travel to Cuba for all American citizens, who continue to be the only ones in the whole world who cannot freely visit our country.”
Hopefully as time progresses, we will seen further easing of the travel restrictions to Cuba in the coming years.

This change is really needed since everyone knows that the restrictions have only strengthened the Casto regime. It is time to finally open up Cuba also for American tourists.

I don’t understand why Obama doesn’t just lif all restrictions completely. What exactly have they achieved, apart from helping keeping ordinary Cubans very poor. This is the whol problem with sanctions – it only affects ordinary people who usually don’t have anything to do with why the sanctions were introduced in the first place.
Luckily I’m from the UK, so I can visit. But I feel really sorry for Americans who want to visit but can’t.

Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

The ability to open the doors to a cultural exchange is good for both countries. With time and learning, everyone will benefit from each other.
Some things just take time, and the thing that is most important, is that these two different cultures now have the ability to learn more about each other in positive ways. Shouldn’t this be a good beginning point?
