Malaysia tightens student visa requirements

Posted on September 5th, 2012 by Annemarie Keller

Malaysia is one of Asia’s fastest growing education hubs and international students wanting to pursue higher education will soon face stricter requirements. The Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) has been monitoring the intake of international students to help reduce the possibility of students working illegally or engaging in criminal activity. Under the new system, international students will only be issued a visa after they have received an offer from a college/university that is approved by the EMGS. They will also verify that students have adequate funds for the duration of their studies.  Currently, international students can get a visa and then look for a college/university after they arrive.

International students will also be required to have student health insurance for the duration of their studies and learn the local language. International students will be required to take a Malaysian language course during their first year of studies to help them interact and get to know the locals better.

EMGS has said all of this should be in effect by the end of the year.
