Muslim Student Tasered At UCLA

Posted on November 16th, 2006 by InternationalStudentGuru

The international community and the net in general is buzzing at the moment as a video has surfaced of a student who is being tasered by UCLA police. What’s more the student appears to be Muslim, and though unconfirmed what appears to have happened is that when asked the student failed to show a valid student ID card.

There are lots of rumours going around the internet, and I don’t think all the facts are out – but this is obviously a very shocking event.

Viewer discretion is advised – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyvrqcxNIFs

Would love to hear your thoughts on this……

International Student Enrollment Showing Signs of Rebounding After 9/11

Posted on November 16th, 2006 by InternationalStudentGuru

During International Education Week 2006, the Open Doors Survey released it annual results of international student mobility in and out of the USA, and the signs are looking promising that the number of international students coming to the USA are on the rise again. Though the official figures show a slight fall from the previous year – 565,039 students in 2004/05 to 564,766 students in 2005/06 – the promising figures are in the number of new international student enrollments for 2005/06 which is up 8% to 142,923 new students enrolled in the Fall 2005 semester compared to 131,945 in the previous year.

Other findings in the report shows that for the fifth successive year, the University of California is the largest campus in the USA for international students with 6,881 students and Columbia University a close 2nd with 5,575 international students.

British Universities to Spy on Students???

Posted on October 18th, 2006 by InternationalStudentGuru

From an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, it has been reported that the British government has asked university lecturers and staff to “spy” on asian looking students as they believe the countries universities have become a breeding ground for Muslim extremists.

According to the article, which cites The Guardian newspaper in the UK, there is an 18 page report which describes the problem and the proposal for university staff to spy on students.
