Mariana Studying in Canada Part III

Another month has passed for me here in Winnipeg. I have survived -50 degrees Celsius, and have – yet again – fallen (this time it was on top of a dead pigeon!). However, all of these moments are amazing. We are in the middle of the term now so it’s time for the midterms. My first French composition has been a success. At first, I was a bit scared and reluctant to write the composition as I have only had a couple of French classes, but it turns out I am good at it.
Just last week I adopted a cat to keep me company. Her name is Mollie, and she is a rescue cat from the Winnipeg Humane Society. I recommend having a pet if you’re living alone for the first time. They are a great help; now I never feel alone.
I also started volunteering at a child daycare and it has been a great experience. I look after the children. There are two sections, the toddler section and the 4 years or older section. They are both fun to work in, but the toddler space requires much more responsibility as we have to wash their hands and do other things for them since they are so little. I’m also a volunteer note-taker for accessibility services at the university.
One thing I love about living in Winnipeg are the number of events that happen. There was an amazing show in which the band members played ice instruments! Yes, the instruments were made out of ice. During that event I got the chance to have a drink out of an ice cup. It froze my mouth, but it was totally worth it.
There was also an Indigenous Storytelling event, which was very interesting. The indigenous elders gathered up and told stories about their past and culture. It’s saddening to hear the amount of stories and things that have happened to people in the past that we are not aware of, and that no one speaks of. This amazing event was free and they also served free lunch, which was very good.
Hopefully next month there will be many great events again. I intend on going to all of them.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to one of the events that I wanted to go to the most this month: Festival du Voyageur. It’s an event that happens every year, there are a bunch of ice sculptures, a silent disco, classic Canadian foods, and many more things. It’s ok though, there’s always next year.
