Tips for Making a Good Impression at your Internship
Posted on June 29th, 2015 by Jenny FrankelInternships are an important part of the education process and they serve as a jumping off point into a professional career. Internships are a great way to network with and meet professionals, gain experience in the film industry and potentially turn your unpaid internship into a full time job. If you want to make a good impression at your internship here are a few tips to get you started.
It is all about attitude when you’re an intern. No one wants to work with someone who is grumpy, distant or always late. Be punctual, if not five minutes early everyday. Greet everyone with a smile, starting from the moment you walk in the door. If someone asks you to do something, even if it’s simply grabbing some coffee, do it…with a smile! Someone will take notice of your great attitude and maybe even ask you to do tasks that require more responsibility and skill. Acting in a professional manner will also get you more tasks with substance, which is what you want to be doing in the first place.
Finding a mentor is another important part of an internship. Find someone who has a similar job to the one you would want and shadow them for a day. See what their job is like, what they do, how they act. A mentor is also helpful in that they can answer any questions you might have and show you new skills. If you develop a relationship with your mentor, they can even write you a letter of recommendation or if they’re in a higher position, maybe even hire you on or connect you with someone who can hire you.
Remember, when completing an internship, have a good attitude, be professional, be appreciative and find a mentor. All these things can help turn your internship into a paying job. If you still need to find an internship get started on your search before the end of summer!
