Do you have the Nursing Student Style Down?

As a nursing student, you will undoubtedly be asked to write a countless number of papers- all in the style of APA format, of course. Instead of simply presenting you with information on APA format, we will also show you how it’s done! The American Psychological Association 6th edition (APA) provides a standardized guideline for publication and writing style for the social sciences; namely, psychology, sociology, education, and nursing (American Psychological Association, 2013). This type of standardization incorporates elements such as formatting, referencing, in-text-citation and how to avoid plagiarism. Uniformity across disciplines ensure creditability and concision. Many individuals refer to the Owl Purdue Online Writing Lab as an APA format reference source due to it being user friendly, easy to navigate and continually kept up-to-date (Angeli et., 2013).

For English as a Second Language (ESL) students, Cimasko and Paiz (2012) at the Owl Purdue Online Writing Lab have written a concise handout for international students studying in the US. Topics include university and college classroom expectations such as how to address your professor, communication etiquette, and tips on what to avoid in the US classroom. Nall (2012) of Owl Purdue also writes an enlightening synopsis for international students concerning plagiarism. Nall defines plagiarism as “the academically dishonest practice of using another’s words or ideas as your own” (Nall, 2012, para. 2). Plagiarism is a serious offence in the United States. International students will find Nall’s tips on how to avoid this offense while paraphrasing to be quite useful and informative.
