Show Production and House of Worship Technology

Posted on March 24th, 2014 by Bryanna Davis

concert 99111802Some church services look very similar to rock concerts these days. The lead singer with perfectly gelled hair strums his electric guitar while the drummer pounds out the beat in the back and lights dance around the room in bright green, blue, and red hues. The only difference between this service and a concert is the screen flashing lyrics to the current song behind the band. As an international student, a show production degree could lead you down many interesting routes, including working as a house of worship technical engineer. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What is show production?” chances are you might not have thought of this career path.

Houses of worship are more commonly using contemporary methods to help convey traditional messages. If using your talents in the audio and visual fields to help mix the two ideas sound appealing to you, you should consider working towards a show production degree. The good news for international students is that the US does not lack worship venues, and nearly each of them is looking for people who know how to make technical magic happen. This can also be an excellent way to get your feet wet in the industry. The first step is to learn the basics and then you can begin to explore more ways to use these skills.

In addition to volunteering your service over the weekend, you could also work in a religious school. Working for a religious school is a way for you to combine your faith and your vocational skills at the same time. Grammar schools, secondary schools and even universities regularly hold assemblies and worship services where technical expertise is needed. Not to mention the typical school activities: musicals, football games, award ceremonies, choral concerts and assemblies. This is something that you can easily do as an international student; just volunteer for the school you are attending.

More than anything, it is important to realize that there is a wide array of possibilities that come from earning a show production degree or a degree in a similar field. Now when you think about what show production is, know that it’s not just concerts; the possibilities extend to anything that has equipment that needs to be plugged in. Working as a house of worship technical engineer after you have earned a show production degree is only one possibility in this broad field.
