Aviation Degree Programs Take More Than Flying

Posted on July 1st, 2013 by Bryanna Davis

pilotdv2073132If nothing gives you a thrill like the thought of flying planes, then aviation degree programs like flight management can help an international student such as yourself become a pilot. There are over 100 colleges and universities that offer aviation degree programs to international students. By studying flight management, international students not only learn how to fly a plane, they get a well-rounded education, dipping their toes into psychology, sociology, business and many more subjects.

It’s obvious that a flight management degree program will have many classes on how to fly planes. Classes in flight management teach students about the workings of the plane, the flight instruments, hazardous weather and much more.

But before international students begin taking classes in aviation when working towards an aviation degree program, they will go through two years of general education study. General education is a chance to take some interesting elective classes as well as learn advanced math, science and English skills.

Possible elective classes international students can take during their first two years of a flight management program include art history, psychology or another language.

During the general education period international students will also have required classes to take such as English, there students study classic literature and write. Math is also another required subject that can usually be satisfied with geometry, calculus or algebra.

As a student in flight management, math and science courses aren’t likely to go away, as you may need to take advanced courses in these topics depending on the college or university you attend.

If you’re passionate about becoming a pilot, you may want to jump right into learning to fly. But general education courses such as psychology, English and math have to be completed before starting on classes that are more specific to your area of study. Combined with higher level technical classes in aviation degree programs, general education courses will provide international students a well-rounded education.

Please… do you have any suggestion as to which schools if any offer full or partial scholarships for studies in aviation management.

    Hi Austin,

While I’m not aware of a school that would offer you a full scholarship, you are able to search our list of scholarships to help you find the aid you are looking for. There are scholarships available for students in a number of degree programs. Good luck!
