Studying abroad is a great experience and with the right packing list, your travel can run as smooth as butter. Instead of embarking on your journey ill prepared, follow the below study abroad packing list as suggested by the US Department of State and mark off each wanted item as you pack.

Checked Luggage:

Your checked luggage is mainly for bulky items that aren’t urgently required in the beginning of your travel. To make your stay abroad as convenient as possible, you may want to include the following items:

  • Eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • Copies of important documents and emergency contacts
  • Seasonal and cultural appropriate clothing and shoes
  • Converter or transformer
  • Plug adapter
  • Over the counter medication such as pain reliever and allergy medication
  • Personal Cosmetics such as makeup and razors
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Nail Clippers
  • First Aid Kit

Carry-on Bag:

The items in your carry-on bag will be your lifeline until you reach your destination. Only upon arrival in your host country, will you have access to your checked luggage- provided it does not get lost in transit. Make sure you do not check any item that you will need before you arrive at your destination, or even within a few days of being there, include them in your carry-on. Here are a few key items to pack in your carry-on:

  • Passport and visa
  • Airline tickets
  • Emergency contact information
  • Access to funds-debit/credit cards, traveler checks, etc.
  • International calling card/mobile phone
  • International driving permit
  • Prescription medication in original package with doctor’s note
  • Laptop and charger
  • Extra change of clothes
  • Camera and other fragile electronic devices
  • Entertainment for the trip (books, ipod, magazine)

Of course this is simply a study abroad packing list guide, everything may not be needed and you will more than likely think of multiple other items to include. If you aren’t yet to the packing stage of your journey, you can find more on studying abroad here.
