An aircraft pilot was listed as the third most dangerous job after a logger and fisherman according to a 2011 AOL article. If you’re an international student who is wondering how to choose your aviation school and want to attend one of the best schools to study aviation in the US, you should not be threatened by this ranking. For international students that want to study aviation, it is good to know the dangers associated with the job. Keep in mind that all jobs have some amount of danger and this should not affect how to choose your aviation school.
The article states “bush flying, crop dusting, banner towing and piloting commercial flights are all include” as the third most dangerous job. It goes on to say that “crop dusting and bush flying are by far the most dangerous.” So why is crop dusting and bush flying more dangerous? Crop dusting and bush flying requires flying close to the ground in smaller planes. Also, many crop duster pilots and bush flyers as well as air taxis and private pilots are trying to log more hours in order to move up to an airline job. Sometimes, since they do not fly for a company, they neglect to follow necessary protocol which can lead to disaster.
Commercial piloting is a different story. Commercial pilots have better planes and equipment to work with. Many commercial pilots are more experienced, have flown for a longer period of time in different types of aircraft and have degrees from some of the best schools to study aviation at.
When determining how to choose your aviation school, make sure they have the proper degree you want to study and that you find interesting. Also, look for a school that has an opportunity for you to get some flight time, whether that is through a smaller student body or an esteemed aviation program.
It is also a common belief that flying is safer than driving and there are even a few studies which reflect this result. However, many of these studies are skewed because they are conducted by companies that are invested in the flying world, like Boeing. Whether you’re driving or flying there is always room for error. Even walking down a sidewalk has some danger to it.
International students who want to go to the best schools to study aviation should not worry about reports such as the one in AOL since there are hazards with every job. However, international students wanting to study aviation should be aware of the dangers that come with flying, and receive the necessary preparation that an aspiring pilot should receive.
