On May 30th, Florida Governor Jeb Bush, signed into state law a bill to ban the use of state funds for academic travel to Cuba, Iran, Libya, Syria and North Korea. Whether or not people agree with the list, these countries are banned for travel by the US State Department. Beyond the repercussions of that, if you get into any kind of trouble in those countries while visiting, the US Embassy (if there is one) won’t help you at all. Best not to go.

A very fair comment! From doing some research, it appears that some academics are particularly concerned with Cuba being part of this list…

Also – I guess the other thing to consider is not just that there is probably little or no help from the US Embassy, but any insurance coverage you have will most likely be waived traveling to a destination that is on the USA State Department travel advisory list…

I’ve been active in taxes for longer then I care to acknowledge, both on the private side (all my employed life!!) and from a legal stand since satisfying the bar and following up on tax law. I’ve provided a lot of advice and righted a lot of wrongs, and I must say that what you’ve put up makes utter sense. Please uphold the good work – the more individuals know the better they’ll be equipped to deal with the tax man, and that’s what it’s all about.
