Interview With The ‘Advice For Graduates Contest’ Winner!

Posted on June 6th, 2014 by Bryanna Davis

Sarah HongBeing sent into the world after graduation can be scary, even with a degree in hand. Because of this, throughout the month of May we asked students from around the world to give their best piece of advice to graduating international students. We received countless advice that we know will help at least one graduate this year!

Despite the high number of excellent entries we received, we could only pick one winner of the $250 Amazon gift card and the advice for graduates contest winner is Sarah Hong! Sarah is an international student from South Korea at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Read Sarah’s great advice:

“‘You Are Not An Imposter.’ Many times, students, especially those who are high achievers, have the “Imposter Syndrome”; sometimes they are unable to internalize their accomplishments, and think that they do not deserve the opportunities they are given (eg. work, scholarship, awards). Believe in yourself. You deserve everything and you have earned everything. Especially as an international student, you have outdone yourself and sought out the Education you wanted. Now take everything you’ve learned and change the world. You can do it.”

International Student: What made you want to become an international student?

Sarah: “I’ve been an international student for the last 10 years. My first experience of being an international student was when I was 9; my parents sent me to Canada to explore the world and learn English. However, I soon developed love for the country and the people, and I became aware of the importance of global education, so I continue to be an international student.”

International Student: What do you think is the hardest part about being an international student?

Sarah: “Definitely money. Another thing is not having the same opportunities as the citizens of the country; it is expected but it is a lot of hassle to be limited all the time.”

International Student: What do you think is the best part about being an international student?

Sarah: “I think the best part about being an international student is meeting new people and learning new things. I learn new cultural things every day!”

International Student: What is your degree pursuit and career goal?

Sarah: “I am currently enrolled in a 4 year college. After I graduate, I hope to work a bit before going to grad school, either for Public Health or for Social Work. I hope to work for a global company in hopes of helping children and women who are domestically abused.”
